Arab Camera Festival On Tour
On the 6th and 7th of December we will be showing a few films from our festival in The Hague at Het Nutshuis. The Arab Camera Festival has sought out the latest film works of both up-and-coming and veteran filmmakers from Arabic countries. On Thursday and Friday the festival will arrive at Het Nutshuis with a selection of freshly produced films and documentaries. ‘Saturday Morning Gift’ wins ACF Competition
Short film by deceased filmmaker Bassel Al Shahade
The winner of the Arab Camera Festival 2012 Competition is Syrian director Bassel Al Shahade with his short film ‘Saturday Morning Gift’.
Bassel Al Shahade was a young Syrian filmmaker who gave up his studies in the United States to cover the carnage in his native country. He was killed in May this year by shrapnel while filming in the war-ravaged city of Homs. Bassel was an accomplished filmmaker, which gave him an edge over many other citizens-turned-journalists.
Bassel Al Shahade was a gifted 28-year-old filmmaker and activist who longed to see freedom and democracy sweep across his native Syria. A Fulbright Scholar, the Damascus resident came to Syracuse to pursue an M.F.A. degree in film at the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Deeply committed to the revolution against the Syrian regime, he returned to his homeland late last year to cover the uprising as a citizen journalist and to teach others journalism and videography skills, posting their work on social media sites. On May 28, Shahade was killed in the war-torn city of Homs while filming attacks against the Syrian people by government security forces. News of his death was reported worldwide, and he was memorialized in his home country as well as other places around the globe.
