Zakarya survived the August 2013 chemical attack in Syria, over a year of life under siege in Moadamiya, and numerous death threats. After repeated failed attempts at treatment from the gas,he was placed on the pile of deceased bodies and discovered by a friend. He was showing signs of life, so after heroic actions by medical personnel he was revived. His first memory was the ground shaking from the continued shelling and bombing of his home town. The gas was reported to be Sarin by UN observers. After the chemical attack, Zakarya reported to the international media – giving interviews to the NY Times, the BBC, NBC, CBS and others.
