The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, made the following statement on the situation in Syria and the reactions of the international community:

« The situation in Syria is of my utmost concern. The recent developments are outrageous. Shelling a city from warships and hunting down ordinary citizens is abhorrent and despicable. The Assad regime has lost all remaining legitimacy and must step down.

I welcome yesterday’s unanimous condemnation of Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian regime by several heads of state and government. I expect the humanitarian mission of the UN, which will be sent to Syria this Saturday, to have full access to all relevant places and to produce an impartial and quick report about the situation on the ground. In particular, I urge for a quick action to consider the situation of the citizens who were held in Al-Ladhiqya’s football stadium. Those responsible for atrocities should know that they will face criminal charges and could be prosecuted by the International Criminal Court.

Europe stands firmly on the side of the Syrian people. I call upon all EU member states to stop all remaining business with the Assad regime. Our sanctions must be clear and effective. We cannot allow oil and gas revenues or any other sources to fuel the violent crackdown of the regime on the Syrian people. Our responsibility is to protect democracy and human lives.

My thoughts are with the many men and women in Syria that have fought for their dignity and their freedom without fatigue or fear. Far too many have lost their life. I am sure their struggle was not in vain. The Syrian people will prevail and will make its destiny.

Europe will continue to support the aspirations of the people with all available means. »
