Syrian Crisis: The Art of Resilience

Article  •  Publié sur Souria Houria le 11 avril 2014

On April 9th, 2014, the World Bank will host an art exhibition featuring 35 paintings by 15 Syrian artists who were given the time and space to work at an artist residence in Lebanon.
More than 130,000 people have been killed in the war in Syria, which has caused one of the largest refugee exoduses in modern history. The United Nations estimates that 9.3 million Syrians need humanitarian assistance. In addition to the 2.5 million Syrians made refugees, the UN estimates that around 6.5 million Syrians are internally displaced.  Among the millions affected by the conflict, Syrian artists vividly illustrate their internal processing of their society’s exposure to widespread violence.
Join World Bank President Jim Yong Kim for the exhibition opening, which will feature a lively discussion on the power of iconography in the Syrian context, via webcast. The opening event will take place in the atrium of the World Bank’s main complex.
